Sturgeon Slowly Return to the Hudson

New York State fisheries officials are tracking the slow return of breeding Atlantic sturgeon to the Hudson River more than a decade after a population crash prompted a moratorium on fishing for the giants. Many are still caught in offshore nets aimed at dogfish and monkfish, so federal officials have proposed giving sturgeon populations greater protection under federal law.
